Drive-By Truckers at Pabst Theater

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

I went to the DBT show in Milwaukee this past Thursday, and as usual, they rocked the house. They played at the Pabst Theater, which is definite proof of the band’s recent success. The show was great, but it was probably my least favorite of the many times I’ve seem them. The last two times I saw them, they were playing at smaller, more intimate, clubs; the High Noon Saloon in Madison and Shenk Hall in Milwaukee. The P.A. system at the Pabst Theater was awful. It had zero low-end, and the mid-to-high range was harsh. Either way, the band rocked on!

The highlight of the evening was obviously the DBT, but leaving the keys in the car, shots of Jack, $3 tallies of PBR, and almost getting arrested at PDQ made it an evening to remember.

INXS Still Rules

I went to Milwaukee last night to see INXS at the Riverside Theater, and I was pleasantly surprised. I’ve been a INXS fan for years. I remember listening to Listen Like Thieves on vinyl when I was a kid. So, when I heard about INXS replacing Michael Hutchinson, I wasn’t thrilled. Hutchinson had such a magic about him that seemed impossible to replace.

Well, if there’s anyone in the world that can fill Hutchinson’s shoes, I think they found their man. JD was awesome! I watched Rockstar INXS, and I was worried that JD was going to be this American Idol-ish, clean-cut, make me wanna puke, Kelly Clarkson wanna-be. But in reality, JD, at times, almost made me forget about Hutchinson. He commanded the stage like a rock ‘n’ roller, not some pre-fab pop star.

Let’s not forget the rest of the band. They rocked. I was impressed. They didn’t move around like 20-somethings, but they still rocked all the same. The music was on. I was very impressed with their drummer. The guy was twirling his sticks having a good time, and the guy did not miss a single beat.

Scott Strapp opened. Umm, well, that’s all I’m going to say about that. If you like Creed, you would have liked his show.

Rodney Mullen

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

I was big Mullen fan when I skated back in the day, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found this video. He has got to be one of the most underrated skaters of all time. It’s ashame he never got as big as say Tony Hawk or some of the others due to his “freestyle” approach to skating. Whether you skate or not, you have got to appreciate his talent…

Bush grabbing at straws on the immigration problem

If Bush thinks sending 6,000 National Guards to the sourthern border is going to fix the problem, he’s sorely mistaken. It almost seems like Bush couldn’t think of anything better, so he’s attempting to stick his finger in the dam, so to speak. More troops at the borders may not be a bad idea, but it MUST be coincided with a bigger plan, and it shouldn’t be just the Mexican border. Bush sending troops only to the southern border, to me, is narrow-minded, not to mention racist.

Immigrants typically come here for a better life, which I don’t blame them one bit. Let us not forget, the United States is a melting pot, and aside from the Native Americans, we’re all immigrants. I do believe there must continue to be some type of legal immigration, but that’s another topic.

On that note, I believe we must make our country a less desirable place for illegal immigrants. The “illegals” find work, don’t pay taxes, and use the resources we pay for. This isn’t right. So, here’s a few ideas…

1) Increased security at all borders, ports, and airports. Pretty self-explanatory.

2) Proof of citizenship or a green card to get a driver’s license. A driver’s license will expire when the green card expires. Illegals caught driving without a license will be deported.

3) Businesses/individuals employing illegals will receive harsher fines($5-10k per illegal). After three violations, businesses will be forced to close its doors for 10 days. Currently, the fines are nothing more than a slap on the hand, and the businesses still come out ahead.

4) Public schools. Illegal parents can continue to send their children to public schools, but will be forced to either show proof of paying taxes for the past three years, proof of pursuing citizenship, or must pay a hefty fee for each child. It doesn’t matter if the child is a citizen as a result of them being born in the United States.

Either way, I think our government should make it difficult for illegal immigrants to use our counties resources.

Firefox is forcing users to upgrade

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

The Firefox people are typically the good guys, but I’m starting to wonder about their latest business tactics. Twice this week, Firefox has installed their software without my okay. Each time I got a message saying the version of Firefox has been downloaded, the next time you restart it will update. What kind of crap is that? I don’t like any company trying to force updates down my throat.
